A Community

Yoga Sivananda is a community of individuals and families interested in learning to live life with their whole being. It is their joyful participation in all aspects of the centre that really brings it to life. As a participant you are always welcome to offer your talents and skills and be active in the life of the centre. It is the people who make Yoga Sivananda such a warm and welcoming place.

A bit of History

Yoga Sivananda is the only full-time yoga centre in the Aylmer sector of Gatineau, Quebec. This family-run centre has been located in Aylmer since 2002. Classes were initially at St. Mark’s Church on rue Principale. As interest grew we added classes in the Mountain View church on Vanier Road - an historic landmark of Aylmer North – and in whatever spaces we could rent or borrow. In August 2006 we established our growing community in a permanent space on rue Principale. It was a beautiful spot tucked under the eaves of the historic Hudson house on a cornerstone in Old Aylmer. It was at this time that we also became an official affiliate of Sivananda Yoga Centres International, an acknowledgement of our teaching heritage. Just as this new centre was starting to really glow with good energy, however, it was destroyed by fire in April 2007 along with most of the building that housed it. Thankfully no one was hurt. With the help of many and Grace from above we faced the challenge of starting over and re-opened at a temporary location a few doors down from the Hudson house.

The fire was an opportunity to reconfirm our purpose and rebuild an even better space for our vision of developing a community-oriented centre. In September 2008 we finally moved into our new permanent location. The centre is now comfortably installed in a brand new building at 745 chemin d'Aylmer (Suite 204).  This location is more centrally located for the region at large while remaining very much within Aylmer. It provides many amenities for students of the centre. We are very grateful to the many loyal friends who have travelled with us through all of these moves. Our attention is now fully focused on providing a complete and varied yoga programme for the benefit of all.
